SKIN PATCH TESTINGHistory, Science & Medical Uses
Lemongrass, scientifically known as Cymbopogon citratus, is native to the tropical and sub-tropical regions of Asia and Africa. The plant has been used in traditional medicines for centuries, dating back to ancient India. Its use can be found in Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine from India, which recommends lemongrass for its healthful properties. The plant has also been used to flavor food and drinks throughout history. In 1667, it was recorded by British naturalist John Ray in his book, “Historia Plantarum”.
In the early 20th century, the plant was traded around the world due to its popularity as an ingredient in food and drink. It was first commercially cultivated in the United States in 1941 and is now grown all over the world. Lemongrass has become increasingly popular for its purported medicinal benefits since then. It is believed to have antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic properties. In addition to being a popular culinary ingredient, lemongrass is used in aromatherapy and other holistic therapies today.
Lemongrass has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments such as indigestion, fever, colds, and inflammation. In recent years, studies have suggested that lemongrass may have potential medicinal properties related to its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, and analgesic activities. Research is underway to further investigate the use of lemongrass for medical purposes.
Possible uses include pain management, wound healing, treating skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, and reducing the risk of infection. Additionally, lemongrass may be beneficial in managing symptoms associated with digestive disorders like Crohn’s disease or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Further clinical studies are needed to determine the efficacy and safety of lemongrass for medical purposes.
The science behind lemongrass lies in its essential oils which are responsible for giving it its distinct aroma and flavor. These oils contain Citral, Geranial, Neral, Limonene, Myrcene, Geranyl Acetate, Citronellal and other compounds.
The primary active compound found in lemongrass is citral which has antimicrobial qualities and has shown to have antioxidant properties as well.
Lemongrass also contains tannins which can help soothe throat irritation and reduce inflammation.
